classical five element acupuncture

Classical Five Element Acupuncture

Classical Five Element Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine which addresses all of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These elements exist in every living thing in the universe, including ourselves.  Each element influences specific organs of the body and their corresponding emotions. For one to truly be healthy and well, all the Five Elements must be balanced and working harmoniously together.

Each one of us has one element which, from early childhood, tends to predominate within us and is known as the Causative Factor of disease. During the course of our demanding and stressful lives, this predominant element can become over- or under-active, causing our corresponding organs and emotions to become imbalanced. This imbalance creates disharmony in the Five Element cycle, and symptoms of ill health begin to appear at any or all levels of the body/mind/spirit.  Classical Five Element Acupuncture stands apart from other types of acupuncture in this fundamental recognition of a Causative Factor, or root imbalance, and the diagnosis and treatment of all parts of a person.

As well as providing relief from symptoms and conditions, this system of medicine increases vitality, enhances emotional well-being and lifts our spirits.  Regular treatment also acts as preventative medicine by maintaining the wellbeing of the predominant element and the five-element cycle before symptoms appear.   Classical Five Element Acupuncture is an elegant and comprehensive system of healing, providing patients with a complete and effective means of regaining balance on all levels. It is one of the safest and most thorough systems of medicine in the world.

FAQs

What can I expect when I start treatment?

The initial appointment takes up to two hours and includes a thorough medical and personal history, description of complaints, a review of the functioning of the systems of the body, and a physical examination. Sometimes this first visit also includes an acupuncture treatment. Each patient's response to treatment varies according to the severity of their illness, how long he/she has had it, his/her general health, and lifestyle.  Typically, follow-up treatments are given once per week for the first six to eight weeks. As the patient improves, visits are reduced to once every ten days, two weeks, once a month, and so on. Most patients continue with care as desired to maintain their health and facilitate growth.

How long does a treatment take and what actually happens?

Appointments are generally scheduled for one hour. Prior to each treatment, patients have an opportunity to talk about how they've been, how they feel, and what's happening in their lives. This is essential in order to precisely determine the treatment which is called for at that time. The pulses are read and moxa and/or needles are applied. The response to the treatment will be assessed by reading the pulses. Dietary and other lifestyle recommendations will be discussed at appropriate times throughout treatment.

Can acupuncture treatment help with non-physical problems?

Yes, absolutely. Classical Five Element Acupuncture views the body, mind, and spirit as a whole entity. Any physical disorder may cause an imbalance in the mental outlook and spirit of a person. This may manifest as depression, anxiety, anger, and/or sadness. Mental conflict, stress, and emotional issues will affect the physical body in ways such as sleep disturbances, digestive issues, fatigue, menstrual disorders, headaches, lowered immunity to disease, inflammation, and any other possible illness or disease. Any imbalance will manifest on all levels, all part of the whole. All Classical Five Element Acupuncture treatments aim to restore the harmony of body, mind, and spirit. Thus, the physical and non-physical sides of a patient are treated together.
